Degree Programme in Aviation and Tourism Business | Master of Hospitality Management

The Master's Degree Programme in Aviation and Tourism prepares students for work in diverse and challenging professional tasks, for example in service and experience design, human resources, customer relationship and sales and management.

The Degree Programme is based on the future needs of the aviation and tourism industries with a focus on customer-orientation, globalisation, continuous change and sustainability. It is planned especially for experts in travel agencies, tour operating, aviation and other sectors in transportation, travel management and tourism organisations. The goal is to raise the know-how of an expert to a developer level. After the studies the graduates will be able to implement change projects and lead the transformation of their organization toward achieving its higher competitive advantage in a flux, global and international business environment.

Studies provide students with general competences, such as interaction competency, required in all organizations and with business specific skills and competencies, depending on the chosen specialization area by the student.

Compulsory studies focus on research and development skills as well as competences needed in developing organizations and leading change. Studies enhance students’ abilities in analytical and critical thinking and problem solving. Specialization studies focus on business related skills and competencies. Studies enhance the students’ ability to apply current research knowledge in their professional field.

Specialization areas

Experience Economy and Designing Services

In the Experience Economy and Designing Services specialization, students use customer understanding to design and develop services and experiences. This specialization focuses on the study and development of new innovative services and experiences.

Service design creates a solid foundation for service development. In this specialization, students utilize and practice real-life processes and methods by working on companies’ service design commissions. Many services are produced by service provider networks, which is why the development of customer paths is important in network-like operations as well.

Experience economy is a growing industry that strives to create intangible content and significance to, for example, develop events, customer service, brands or business images and improve customer experience.

For example, students can study the following themes in the specialization:

  • Service design processes and methods
  • Development of services in a network
  • Production and development of experiences
  • Development of brand experience

Strategic Thinking and Management

Strategic Thinking and Management specializes in the study and development of strategy work to achieve organizations’ long-term success. The focus is on strategic decision-making and the implementation of strategies.

For example, students can study the following themes in the specialization:

  • Analysis of organizations’ business environments and strategies
  • Experimental, communal, critical and virtual use of strategy tools
  • Coordination of finances and productivity in decision-making
  • Past, present and future of strategic management

Leadership and People Management

Leadership and People Management specializes in the study and development of strategic and business-driven people management. This specialization focuses on both human resource management and first-line management.

The specialization examines strategic, business-driven perspectives on people management and factors that influence people’s actions. It is crucial to understand how human resources impact the success of a company. These studies focus on practices used to influence people at work. This specialization provides various perspectives on staff development.

For example, students can study the following themes in the specialization:

  • Strategic human resource management
  • Employee experience and employer branding
  • Management of diversity
  • Successful managerial work
  • Perspectives on leadership

Leading sales and customer experience

Leading Sales and Customer Experience focuses on customer experience, its management and digitalization through research and development. This specialization also examines the digitalization and strategic management of sales in a multi-channel environment.

Students study and develop strategic sales solutions and their impact on customer experience and companies’ business objectives. The specialization is entirely organized around digital sales and customer experience and it explores motives that can develop and improve these areas continuously.  In addition, Sales Lab and eComLab, Haaga-Helia’s lab environments that use world-class sales and purchase analytics, provide a unique learning dimension and environment.

  • Management of sales and sales organizations
  • Strategic sales planning in a digital business environment
  • Development and management of customer experience in the digital age
  • Customer journey and customer experience analysis
  • Development of sales in an increasingly international multi-channel environment

Communication and marketing management

Communication and Marketing Management combines creativity and strategic thinking to make communication and marketing generate new value for organisations and their stakeholders.

This specialisation approaches communication and marketing as functions that impact the success and well-being of an entire organisation. The focus is on communication and marketing experts who promote their organisation’s ability to the goals set. Communication and Marketing Management students have the opportunity to study and develop organisations’ strategy-driven communication and marketing in a digital business environment and stakeholder networks.

The themes of this specialisation include:

  • Strategic brand management
  • Planning and management of creative processes
  • Utilisation of digital marketing technologies
  • Development of effective communication in various human interactions

Digital Business Opportunities

The Digital Business Opportunities specialization prepares students to identify and utilize the business opportunities offered by leading-edge digital technologies. It provides a multi-disciplinary study platform for business development using new digital technology. The specialization enables students to assess the maturity of new technologies and apply them in the digital business transformation.

For example, students study the following themes in the specialization:

  • Modern digital service design driven by customer experience
  • AI-based business analytics for business development
  • Business process rationalization using robotic process automation
  • Business transformation based on new technologies and trends

The specialization provides the student with generic knowledge which can be applied widely in any industry and business or in the public sector. No prior knowledge is assumed when starting the studies, but the student must be prepared to acquire the basic programming skills independently.

Entrepreneurial business management

The focus of Entrepreneurial Business Management is on the innovation, analysis and development of new business opportunities.

This specialization is perfect for a student who wants to use an entrepreneurial approach to develop their organization or who is considering founding their own business in the future or who already is an entrepreneur and wants to experiment with their company’s potential for growth.

Entrepreneurial Business Management teaches entrepreneurial attitude, processes and methods of innovation and design thinking, networking and reflection skills, application of business development tools, and commercialization.

For example, students can study the following themes in the specialization:

  • Identifying and utilizing opportunities
  • Key success and failure factors for start-ups
  • Start-up ecosystems and how to utilize them
  • How to grow a start-up
